What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural human response to stress or perceived danger, characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure. It’s normal to experience anxiety occasionally, such as before a big presentation or during significant life changes. However, when anxiety becomes excessive, persistent, and interferes with daily activities, it may indicate an anxiety disorder.

An anxiety disorder involves more than temporary worry or fear. It can cause intense, prolonged symptoms that disrupt daily life, relationships, work, and overall well-being. Recognizing the signs of an anxiety disorder is the first step toward effective treatment and reclaiming control over your life.

Prevalence and Impact of Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions, affecting millions of people worldwide.

  • In the United States, approximately 31.1% of adults experience an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives (National Institute of Mental Health, 2017).
  • Among adolescents aged 13-18, about 31.9% have an anxiety disorder, with a higher prevalence among females than males (Merikangas et al., 2010).
