Our rehabilitation psychology services for brain injury at the Rowan Center for Behavioral Medicine strives to assist individuals with brain injury to improve their quality of life through advancing their health, maximizing productivity, and participation in life activities. Because brain injury is often associated with cognitive, mood, and/or behavioral problems psychologists are able to assist patient overcome these difficulties with treatments that are geared toward minimize disability and maximize productivity.The services we offer includes evaluation by neuropsychologist and regular, on-going follow-up visits with a Psychologist who specializes in Rehabilitation Service. More specifically we offer diagnostic assessment, individual and group therapy for cognitive difficulties and adjustment to disability and emotional difficulties, family therapy and education, independent living skills, socialization skills, and school or job counseling. Treatments typically involves providing strategies, coaching, support to improve function in the real world. We work with patients and families, to help them cope with the unpredictable aspects of chronic illness and disability.

We will also take every step to ensure that care is coordinated with the patient’s neurologist, primary care doctor and other treating providers when appropriate. We strive to offer a holistic approach to treatment.

The Rehabilitation Psychology Program provides the following:

  • Acute and chronic pain management
  • Adjustment to injury and/or medical illness
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy for depression and anxiety
  • Brief neuropsychological evaluations (standardized evaluation of cognitive skills, including attention, memory, language, sensory-perceptual skills, and reasoning capacity).
  • Cognitive rehabilitation therapy
  • Stress management
  • Information for rehabilitation management, including issues related to treatment, return to independent living, and return to work or school.
  • Patient and family education

Dr. Narineh Hartoonian is a clinical health and rehabilitation psychologist who has several years of interdisciplinary clinical and research experience in health and rehabilitation psychology and has served the needs of many individuals with acquired and traumatic injuries, including brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, and many other neurological conditions. She specializes in the treatment of patients with neurological conditions and applying cognitive rehabilitation to assist in minimizing disability and maximizing productivity.   Dr. Hartoonian’s strong desire to support patients with rehabilitation need has led her to spend most of her graduate and post-graduate  training researching cognition and mood in these populations .  Learn more about Dr. Hartoonian
